Academy of Medical Sciences honour

Jonathan Shepherd
Professor Jonathan Shepherd has been elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences’ council.
The council is the governing body for the Academy, the independent body in the UK representing the whole spectrum of medical science. Its mission is to ensure better healthcare through the rapid application of research to the practice of medicine.
Professor Shepherd, of the School of Dentistry, has been a Fellow of the Academy since 2002 and was encouraged by colleagues to stand for the council. He will now serve a three year term on the body.
The Academy of Medical Sciences exists to encourage internationally excellent medical science and its translation into direct healthcare around the world. It also seeks to attract people to careers in medical science and to promote medical research with Government and the public.
Professor Shepherd said: "Becoming a Fellow of the Academy was a great honour and I’m now thrilled to be on the council. It’s a chance to contribute to the leadership and work of the Academy in the medical sciences."
Professor Shepherd is well-known for his work on the health impacts of violence and for promoting a partnership approach between public services to reduce crime.
He added: "I continue to have a personal interest in how medicine can share its expertise in research and development with the other major public services, such as justice and education. The Academy is a major opportunity to develop this work further."
