Alex de Waal to speak on peacekeeping in Darfur

The Executive Director of the World Peace Foundation Alex de Waal is to speak about the violence in Darfur at The University of Manchester this week (13 October)

Speaking at the inaugural Tri-Institute lecture, the former senior advisor to the African Union High Level Implementation Panel for Sudan will look at patterns in lethal violence in the region.

The lecture will be informed by data for violent fatalities in Darfur, collected by the Joint Mission Analysis Centre of the UN-AU hybrid mission in Darfur (UNAMID)

He will argue that though the data is a valuable instrument for implementation of peace support operations, such evidence is not always welcome to those who make decisions.

Alex de Waal is also Research Professor at Tufts University and Program Director at the Social Science Research Council.

His academic research has focused on issues of famine, conflict and human rights in Africa. He was awarded an OBE in the UK New Year’s Honors List of 2009, was on the Prospect/Foreign Policy list of 100 public intellectuals in 2008, and the Atlantic Monthly list of 27 ‘brave thinkers’ in 2009.

The tri-institute lecture is a joint event held by the Brooks World Poverty Institute, Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute and the Institute for Development Policy and Management – all at The University of Manchester.
