Budding writers celebrate with Plymouth University
6 December 2011 - PLYMOUTH
The pupils from Lipson Vale Primary, Lipson Community College, Marine Academy Plymouth and St Budeaux Primary all took part in a special aspiration-raising project to write their own versions of books currently in production.
Youngsters at Lipson Vale and Lipson Community College will tempt readers’ taste buds with ‘All About Pasties’ – their tribute to the history of Ron and Ivor Dewdney pasties.
Meanwhile, ‘The Story of Our School’, by Marine Academy Plymouth and St Budeaux Primary, has been created in parallel to that of a title at Plymouth University, which marks its 150th anniversary in 2012.
The aim of the project is to provide the students with experience of the writing and publishing process in the real-world, while bringing to life some of the South West’s heritage. The children have been involved in all stages of the process, from research and story ideas to writing, illustration and design.
The project has been brought together by professional children’s book author and publisher Helen Greathead, along with staff and students from the University, and the participating schools.
Gemma Conidis, Widening Participation Officer at Plymouth University, said: “We have been working with students, staff and industry experts and have seen so much potential in the work of the school children.”
Those who took part will share their work in a presentation and exhibition from 3.30pm to 5pm on Wednesday 7 December, in the Stonehouse Lecture Theatre, Portland Square, Plymouth University.
Fellow Widening Participation Officer Alison Valerio added: “This is a celebration of their achievements and is also an opportunity for the students to visit the University and share their experiences.”
