Creating impact through cultural collaborations

King’s has hosted a meeting of minds with some of its key cultural partners to develop new ideas for how the sector can work with the academic community.
The Creative Futures Symposium, held in the Weston Room at the Maughan Library on Wednesday 26 October, launched a new phase for developing academic projects on impact and innovation in culture.
Chaired by Matthew Taylor, CEO of the Royal Society of Arts, the event saw a series of panels discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the cultural sector over the next four years.
Speakers and attendees included representatives from the National Theatre, National Gallery, Southbank Centre, British Film Institute, British Museum and the British Library.
Professor Jan Palmowski, Head of the School of Arts and Humanities at King’s, welcomed the delegates and introduced the symposium, which focused on three themes: Curation for the 21st Century, Arts and the Digital World and Translating Cultures.
King’s will be directing investment from its Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) towards the support of innovation in the cultural sector over the next four years, with the aim of building a bridge between academic researchers and those working in museums, theatres, galleries and libraries.
Professor Jan Palmowski said: ‘This was a great opportunity for academics interested in developing ideas about how their work can have an impact on society to meet with representatives from the cultural sector.
‘Over the next few years we will seek to bring our close connections to the cultural sector to a new level, working with our partners to enable our research to inform society and culture in new ways.’
