Surfing lessons: skill sharing with the local community

The University Of Nottingham has joined forces with a local charity to offer free basic IT skills training courses for older people in Nottinghamshire.

Community IT Champions run by the Rural Community Action Nottinghamshire (RCAN), is a project targeted at Nottinghamshire residents aged 50 and above. Participants learn new computer skills to help them get the best from online services including cheaper energy deals, insurance and other useful information. With the help of staff volunteers, the University will be hosting weekly courses for a group of eight local residents from 3 November 8 December.

Jacqui Storey, Skills Sharing and Knowledge Exchange Manager at the University said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with RCAN in helping to support older people in Nottinghamshire.

The University has an on-going commitment to partnership working and we have many staff and students involved in skills sharing and volunteering schemes in the local community. This project offers the opportunity for staff volunteers to share their skills in delivering good quality IT training.”
