Sussex retains top-100 place in world rankings
New rankings confirm the University of Sussex’s place among the best universities in the world.
For the second year in a row Sussex is ranked among the top 100 research-led global universities, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2011-12.
Sussex has been placed 12th in the UK, 31st in Europe and 99th in the world in the table, published today (5 October).
The results set Sussex alongside some of the world’s most prestigious institutions. Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, said: "The top 200 represents approximately the top one per cent of higher education institutions in the world."
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, said: "In the increasingly competitive world of university education, it is gratifying to see Sussex, now in its 50th year, recognised once again as one of the very top institutions in the world.
"We continue to prove our worth against bigger, older and richer universities around the globe, thanks to the quality of our research, the calibre of our students and the unique setting and experience we can offer those who come to teach and learn from all over the world."
The rankings use 13 performance indicators, grouped into five areas:
- Teaching - the learning environment (worth 30 per cent of the overall score)
- Research - volume, income and reputation (30 per cent)
- Citations - research influence (30 per cent)
- Industry income - innovation (2.5 per cent)
- International outlook - staff, student and research (7.5 per cent).
