The Big Draw 2011: the big sketchbook challenge
This year, the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery’s Big Draw activity has been inspired by the University’s collection of sketchbooks by the artist and art historian Stephen Chaplin (born 1934).
To find out more about Chaplin and to see a selection of his fascinating sketchbooks pop in to the Gallery or visit the Brotherton Library foyer between 3 - 21 October.
Between 1 and 21 October, lovely concertina sketchbooks will appear in various places around the whole university campus so you can sketch in all of them! A map of the locations will be available in the Gallery. Fill them with your observations, ideas and doodles, and your art will be displayed in the Brotherton Library Foyer and outside The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery in the Parkinson Court from Monday 24 October.
And now.... start drawing!
Find one of our sketchbooks, take a few minutes to look around your surroundings, and document the moment through a quick sketch. Stephen Chaplin often sketched the most mundane objects such as crumpled crisp packets and his mug of tea, often annotating his drawing with a couple of words, date and time, or his personal impressions.
In connection with the month-long Big Draw campaign, the Gallery will host a drawing and sketching afternoon on Saturday 8 October.
Visitors will be invited to join this free-flowing, informal afternoon dedicated to drawing, sketching and doodling for everyone.
Come and sketch, meet friends or just relax in the inspirational space of the Gallery for a couple of minutes - or the whole afternoon.
The afternoon is free and all are welcome.
