Univeristy sailing teams set to make a big splash at annual event
30 October 2011 - PLYMOUTH
For the second year running, Plymouth will host teams from across the country in the British Universities & Colleges Sport Fleet Racing National Championships.
Over 120 boats from 20 different universities will be taking part in two days of racing in what is the highlight of the University and Colleges sailing calendar.
Plymouth University is entering 29 boats with experienced European and World level competitors Charlotte Greenhahalge, Sophie Mackeeman, and Anna Piggott and Marcel Herrera among hopefuls.
Racing takes place on 5 and 6 November at the Mount Batten Centre with a social event on completion at the University of Plymouth Students’ Union.
Plymouth University’s Water Sports Coordinator & Development Officer Phil Timings said: “As well as proving to be a fun weekend, this event attracts high quality racing in some of the best sailing waters in the country as recently seen when Plymouth hosted the America’s Cup.
"The University is also celebrating events leading up to its 150th Anniversary and to mark the occasion, the winners of Race 2 in the Firefly Fleet will be awarded the Marine Institute 150 Years ‘with Plymouth University’ trophy.”
Other prizes include BUCS Medals and points for boats placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all fleets raced, numbers permitting, and 4th placed boats will also be awarded BUCS points.
