University celebrates Romanian culture
25 November 2011 - PLYMOUTH
This festival marks the on-going partnership between the Plymouth University and the Romanian Cultural Institute, launched in 2009 heralding the publication of 20 Romanian Writers and Associated Artists Series.
This year it will focus on performing arts with a book launch, theatre and dance, with BBC radio presenter Rosie Goldsmith introducing the next four selected titles in the series by leading Romanian authors, and Romanian actress Cristina Catalina performing readings, bringing each of the texts to life.
University of Plymouth Press Manager, Paul Honeywill, said: “The event boasts an exciting weekend featuring some of the most acclaimed Romanian contemporary directors and performers, showcasing multimedia presentations. It will also be complemented with workshops from professional practitioners, with a play by Line Knutzon and performances from Plymouth University students.”
The featured authors include Nicolae Manolescu, Ion Muresan, Mircea Cartarescu and Razvan Petrescu.
Ruth Way, Head of Theatre and Performance, Plymouth University, said: “We are delighted to host events as part of the Romanian Festival 2011. An innovative and intimate performance space has been created in the Roland Levinsky building to present a six hour durational piece choreographed by Cosmin Manolescu.”
It’s the third year the Romanian writers have come to Plymouth and BA Dance Theatre students will be working with Manolescu, with sections of the choreography being presented to the public on Saturday.
The event runs over two days, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November at Plymouth University.
