University hosts the biggest Malaysian sporting event in the UK

The University of Nottingham is proud to host the 27th Nottingham Malaysian Games – the biggest Malaysian sporting event in the UK.

More than 5,000 Malaysian students from 50 universities across the UK will take part in a day of sport and games at University Park on November 12.

The Games are organised by the Student Union’s Nottingham Malaysian Society (NMS) in conjunction with the Malaysian Students’ Department for the United Kingdom. The aim is to promote healthy sportsmanship and foster ties between Malaysian students from across the UK

Student athletes will compete in games throughout the day, including football, squash, chess, Scrabble, netball, snooker, basketball, badminton, volleyball and table tennis, as well as traditional Malaysian sports such as congkak, batu seremban, dam haji and CarromCongkakCongkaz.

The student-led Malaysian Society will also be holding a Malaysian Food Festival in the Portland Building during the Games.

President of the Nottingham Malaysian Society, Abdul Haq Mohaidin, said:

“The Games isn’t just ‘a games’; it is a platform to introduce our country, Malaysia. We will be having our traditional poem recited, our Malaysian cuisine sold and familiar Malaysian brands and companies will be joining us.

“Traditional games will be played alongside conventional games and our own Malaysian Olympic athletes will be coming to celebrate, as well as our ministers who will be travelling all the way from Kuala Lumpur; it’s all happening right here in Nottingham!”

The University of Nottingham’s longstanding relationship with Malaysia was strengthened in 2000, when The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus became the first fully operational overseas branch campus opened by a British university. Since then, the student body at UNMC has grown to a community of over 3,600. All UNMC students study in English, for University of Nottingham degrees that are taught and assessed in the same way as those at Nottingham UK.
