University of Birmingham explores further collaborative opportunities in Guangzhou

Following the launch of the University of Birmingham Guangzhou Centre in September 2011, senior academics will return to the city this week to develop additional opportunities for joint research and innovation.

The University will take part in the Guangzhou Convention of Overseas Scholars in Science and Technology from 20th – 21st December 2011 at Guangzhou Pazhou Exhibition and Convention Centre. Delegates can find out about the University’s research expertise in engineering and physical sciences and medicine, and opportunities for knowledge transfer and business engagement. During the convention, University of Birmingham academics will present seminars on energy, high-value engineering, and research and commercial services.

The University of Birmingham Guangzhou Centre is a unique facility established in coordination with People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality to facilitate joint research and education initiatives in Guangzhou, the province of Guangdong and the broader Pearl River Delta region. Additionally, it supports knowledge transfer and engagement with business interests in the region, is a hub for research staff, and enables knowledge and expertise between China and the University of Birmingham to be shared.

Since the launch of the University’s Guangzhou Centre in September activity has focused primarily on research collaboration in areas such as translational medicine, large population studies in lifestyle and infectious diseases and cognitive neuroscience. This week’s visit provides the ideal opportunity to develop additional prospects for collaboration with partners in Guangzhou in the areas of engineering, physical sciences, life sciences and the environment. The delegation is being led by Professor Michael Sheppard, Provost and Vice-Principal of the University of Birmingham.
