Sir Deryck Maughan, Principal Professor Sir Richard Trainor, Lady Va Maughan and David Martinelli, President of the New York Alumni committee.
Sir Deryck Maughan, distinguished alumnus and principal benefactor of the College’s Maughan Library, took to the podium at the Yale Club in New York last week as part of the America
What Next? series of alumni events across the East coast of America.
More than 100 alumni, donors, prospective students and friends of the College came along to hear Sir Deryck’s talk, entitled Is America still a safe investment?
Drawing on his wealth of experience in the financial world, Sir Deryck addressed the challenges facing the United States, touching upon the many political and socio-economic factors currently impacting on the global financial landscape. He also spoke of his time at King’s, which he described as ‘transformative’ and of his delight at having been able to help to with the library.
‘We are honoured to have Sir Deryck with us and to be able to bring together so many members of the growing alumni community in the US,’ said the Principal & President Professor Sir Richard Trainor, who is hosting the series of talks. ‘Sir Deryck has provided us with a hard-hitting but also optimistic assessment which has brilliantly deployed his remarkable expertise in the US and world financial systems.’
Sir Deryck was presented with a biographical profile of his fellow alumnus, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday at the College. The book contained a personal greeting to Sir Deryck from the Archbishop.
The event in New York was the second in the series of US alumni events, following a talk by the Honorable John Hillen in Washington DC on Monday. The series concluded on Thursday in Boston with Professor Joseph Nye sharing his thoughts on the future of American power.
